1975 Porsche 911 Modified Cabriolet
The miraculous transformation of a 1991 911 (964) Carrera into the Speedster RS 3.8
This Speedster RS, registered for road use on April 13th, 1994 with the blessing of TÜV Hessen and clearly based on the 993 model generation, makes no claim to being one of two original copies from the factory in existence worldwide. And yet: the exclusive interpretation based in Alzey is an original in its own right.
The vehicle in detail
The basic model was a 964 RS from the year of construction 1991. At the end of 1993, the car, which had been damaged in an accident, was converted into a Speedster by Porsche development engineers from Weissach. It was converted at the same time as two other vehicles. One was for Mr. Ferdinand Alexsander “Butzi” Porsche as a birthday present and the other for a friend of the Porsche family.
The construction and conversion included the following work:
The first step was to repair the damaged bodywork, which was at the same time converted to the 993 model using original parts. The roof was removed and the conversion to the 993 Speedster was carried out according to factory specifications. A delivered Strosek hardtop made of Kevlar carbon was adapted and permanently mounted. The company Matter GmbH constructed a safety cage, which was then installed. The conversion to the 993 Speedster was completed in spring 1994.
In 1996, the body was further optimized aerodynamically. A rear spoiler from the 993 Turbo prototype, without raised side edges, was used. The car also received the front spoiler of the 993 GT2. Three-piece original “Speedline for Porsche” wheels in 8.5J x 18 at the front and 10.5J x 18 at the rear axle with polished beds and titanium screws with spacers were fitted to the 993 Speedster. The distinctive sound results from a special exhaust system with two tailpipes.
The following modifications were made in 2001:
A more powerful engine (M64.20) from the 993 Carrera RS with 3.8 litres of displacement and 400 Nm of torque was installed. A new 6-speed gearbox was also installed. The engine now runs on two valves per cylinder. The camshafts are driven by double chains and an intermediate shaft. The hot air ducting was modified (without fan). The rear axle rockers of the turbo model were integrated so that the Speedline wheels could be mounted on the rear axle without spacers. The wheel housings at the front and rear were widened and a front strut brace was installed. A completely new exhaust system from Cargraphic with stainless steel heat exchangers was installed. In addition, a dished Momo sports steering wheel with yellow stitching found its place in the interior. Original equipment from the 964 Carrera RS M 001 (carpet model) with three-colored leather-covered original profile bucket seats. The mixture preparation is electronically controlled via the Bosch Motronic 2.1 and has sequential injection.
